About Linda Disosway

Born and brought up in a rural community about two hours south of Chicago, Illinois. I was raised on a farm where nature and animals were a big influence in my childhood.

We lived a very self-sufficient life style. We raised animals and hunted animals for food. We planted fields of corn and soybeans for our livelihood and a vegetable garden for food. I remember my mother and grandmothers sewing all of our clothes. I learned to sew and knit from these women. Our entertainment was spent running and playing in the woods, swimming in the pond, and family cook-outs and camp-outs in the woods.

My childhood experiences have become the foundation for my journey through art. I began to work with fiber while studying at the University of North Texas in 1979. During this time I became fascinated by the weaving process of manipulating and interlocking yarns to form works of art. I also studied surface design techniques using paints and dyes to alter the surface of the fabric. After learning these techniques I incorporated altered fabric, shibori fabric and various hand made papers to create woven pieces in place of yarns.

I found my niche in art and education. After having my own children, I realized teaching kids about art was what I wanted to pursue. I have been teaching since 1995. During my extensive tenure, I have taught at many organizations including: Big Thought (Young Audiences of North Texas), Junior Players, Art Reach, Irving Art Center, Dallas Arboretum, and Studio Art Dallas. I have had the pleasure of teaching in many school districts as well. I have had the honor to curate student exhibits at White Rock Montessori and Branch Park Performing Arts Academy.

As a member of The Dallas Handweaverʼs and Spinnerʼs Guild and Dallas Area Fiber Artistʼs I work to promote the mission statements of both organizations, which include the sharing and the promoting of fiber art education to the public. I am currently residing in Carrollton, Texas where I have a garden, make art in my studio, and teach art at Branch Park Performing Arts Academy.
